IN CHARACTER
Name: Belle
Canon: Beauty and the Beast
Canon Point: Point in time character is pulled from.
Age: 17
History: Links are acceptable. If your character does not have a linkable history, please summarize it here. If playing an AU or CRAU, please describe changes in the character history.
Personality:
Belle's someone who doesn't fit into the mold her time offers to girls of her age. She's a thinker, dreamer and proactive during a century when it wasn't proper for women to be so. She doesn't behave like or hold the same interests as her peers: she doesn't care for men or marriage, nor does she bear much thought for her outer appearance (the dresses she wears are very neutral compared to the other girls' in her home town, save for the ball gown, and you can often see a strand of hair or two running loose on her face without her noticing it). She takes part in neither parties nor other social gatherings and instead prefers to be alone, reading her books. Because of this abnormal behaviour of hers, the rest of the townsfolk see her as a nice but odd girl whom they really can't understand.
Belle is aware that she doesn't fit in with others, but she still doesn't judge anyone or try to force her opinions on others. Being naturally kind, gentle and polite, as a proper lady of her age ought to be, she greets everyone during the mornings and tries to indulge in conversations with the people she meets. Sure, their simple lives and silly comments sometimes earn a small eye-roll from her, but never with ill intention. Overall, Belle is a very patient young lady who wants to see the good in other people and who treats others with respect and kindness-- at least until they prove themselves unworthy of it.
As mentioned above, Belle doesn't judge a book by its cover. Instead of placing her values on beauty and such, she is more interested in the personalities and intelligence that others might hold. She herself is quite well-read and sophisticated thanks to her passion for reading (in her home town she's hardly ever seen without a book with her). Her constant reading has provided her with broad imagination and a witty tongue that she can use to outsmart people. She has also learned to hold a certain standard of refinement and politeness that she expects from both herself and others. It's also thanks to her reading that she has grown to appreciate her own intellect and learned the value of critical thinking. She knows that she doesn't necessarily need to be satisfied with her current life if she doesn't feel that way, and that there's nothing wrong with wanting something greater for her life.
But while she is polite and sometimes seems to have the patience of a saint, she's no pushover. Belle has her limits and isn't going to put up with everything others throw to her. This is best seen in the conversations she has with Gaston, the local town hero. Gaston is probably the only one who openly says that Belle's reading is strange, while the other people in town just leave (not so) subtle hints, and he tries to rudely force Belle to fit in the typical gender norms, which she is not comfortable with. In situations like these Belle still keeps her patience, never raising her voice, but slips a few snarky comments into her speech (“Gaston, you are absolutely primeval”). She also doesn't hesitate to speak up her mind, even when there is possible danger. Even with Beast, who is (at first, at least) dangerously unpredictable and aggressive, she doesn't tolerate rude behaviour and being threatened. She can be quite stubborn too, especially towards people who she feels have mistreated her, but she also knows how to admit her own mistakes and when it is time to apologize.
Belle is someone who always aims to do the right thing, even if it's not the easiest or safest option. Brave and courageous might not be the first things you'd associate Belle with, but she does demonstrate these traits quite often in subtle ways. First of all, it does take courage to stay true to oneself and not to try to change yourself when everyone around you is giving you funny looks. But the moment her bravery and righteousness truly shines is when she offers to take her father's place as the Beast's prisoner, truly believing that she is also sacrificing her chance to obtain any kind of happy future. It's thanks to her open mind, which no doubt she has learned from her supporting father, as well as her patience and willingness to believe in second chances that she is capable of befriending the strange talking furniture and the monstrous Beast and adapting to a scary looking castle, making it her new home.
But as one can guess, being labelled as the resident oddball by the townsfolk has left its mark to her: behind all the polite and optimistic behavior Belle is screaming with frustration. Even though she puts on a smile when going out, she is tired of always drawing odd looks in town, living her boring life day after day, without having anyone to really talk to or relate to-- except for her loving father. Belle is blessed with a curious and imaginative mind and is craving for adventure, anything that could bring a change to her current life. Belle has seen what the environment around the town has to offer her, and she knows that it's not for her. She's not made for quiet town life, where each day resembles another, no. She speaks openly of daring sword fights, far-off places, magic spells, things that are very dream-like, something not from this world. It's not exactly a fairy tale that she's after, but still something akin to it. She yearns to find a place where she can freely be herself, without having to deal with gossip or judgement of others, and more than that, she yearns to find people who she could honestly call her friends. It's also one reason why she is constantly reading books; it's a method for her to escape her dull and suffocating reality and imagine herself in another life, one that offers her more opportunities than the quiet town life.
Belle has grown to be a somewhat reserved person, someone who doesn't necessarily open up to others all that easily. She is so used to being judged by others that she has begun to take it for granted, causing her to not let anyone in until they've proven to be genuinely interested in her. This can be seen in her relationship with Beast; Beast acts coarse and mean towards her, not showing much interest in her as a person, and only sees her as someone who could break the spell, making Belle feel automatically uncomfortable around him. She only warms up to him after his behavior changes and he begins to treat her with respect and actually wants to get to know her.
The safety and well-being of her loved ones is probably the only thing that's more important to her than her dreams of adventure. While Belle never neglects her own needs nor does she think herself less worthy than others, she doesn't hesitate for a second to sacrifice her dreams and happiness if it means she can save people she cares about. In canon she does this twice, in fact: first when she agrees to become Beast's prisoner in her father's place, and then the second time, when she leaves the castle to save her sick father from death, after she has found the life and friends she has been dreaming about and finally found the place she belongs to, without knowing whether she could ever return there.
Contracts: Each character comes into game through an Ingress that is either on the ship or on a planet they've stopped at. They are told that they were brought here outside of anyone's control because the Ingress machines are broken. The captains and crew offer them a place on the ship to work and live until they reach the planet the Ingress was created on. They believe that there it can be fixed and everyone sent home. It's up to you to decide how your character would react and if they would willingly sign the contract and board the ship. Write us a couple lines here telling us their thoughts on it as it's the only way that they would be allowed to board. (This doesn't mean your character 'has' to believe the captains. They could choose the ship life because they are bored, don't want to go home, don't want left on a strange planet. The reason is up to you. Get creative with it.)
Abilities/Skills: Abilities, what abilities?
No but seriously, Belle's just your normal 17 year old girl, but it should be minded that since she's from time when most of people had to do more physical work compared to today (in early film she's seen to do some farm work) it's fair enough to assume that she's in better shape than average girl in modern time. But what she lacks in physical strength she makes up for with her imagination and intelligence. She's very resourceful and is good at working with the information around her and use it for her advantage. She's not one to take the role of passive damsel in distress either, we see her trying to fight against the wolves and rushing to help Beast in the end of the film.
And of course, she has very lovely singing voice.
